I noticed some event messages when I try to install the drivers and thought that might have something to do with it but I don't know enough about what I am looking at to know for sure. The device will remain as a "Unknown Device" in the Device Manager and my controller can not connect. Normally reinstalling the drivers would fix the problem but not this time. I own a knock off Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver that has decided to stop working. Note A standard Xbox 360 wireless controller can be connected to a Windows PC, but you must have an Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver to play games, even if you have an Xbox 360 Play & Charge Kit.
